Congratulations to teams of CEO’s first virtual simulation challenge for placing in the top ten!

Out of 25 teams across the globe UNO’s CEO club placed sixth and tenth in the competition. The competition consisted of running a virtual computer manufacturing company for four quarters. The competition made the four quarters open for two weeks. Team#2, called Ubertech, placed tenth. Team #1, whose company was called BlueHorse Technologies is advancing to the second round, where they will record a video of their strategies and start with a fresh round against the likes of students from Louisiana St., Quinnipiac, Michigan Tech, Clarkson, and even the University of Trinidad and Tobago!

Please cheer our students on!

This week on Thursday, February 17th, Mark Hasebroock will be coming to CEO to speak about his experiences. Mark is a very well versed investor and venture seeker and is not afraid to look back on his mistakes. He will be coming into Mammel Hall room 228H and will be speaking from 5 to 6. Below is an excerpt from his website: http://www.dundeeventurecapital.com/mark-hasebroock/

While attending the University of Nebraska I started a business that sold colorful moccasins to sorority girls, brilliantly called “Bored Feet.” It worked well enough to finance a spring break trip, however, I returned to dozens of disgruntled girls that had multicolored feet. Turns out I didn’t understand my supplier very well. Lesson learned.

After graduating I became a commercial banker learning the ins and outs of lending money to small businesses. This era predated computers and all analysis of financial statements was by hand, white-out was in high demand. It was pain staking but I learned to break down financials from the bottom up.

I left banking and started a business selling ready to eat gourmet popcorn to grocery stores. The hardest job selling you can possibly have is selling to a grocer. It’s a zero sum game and they have no space for your product unless they displace something else. It wasn’t long before I sold the popcorn business

Not too long after this I met a guy who was starting an investment bank. His name was Mike McCarthy. I was intrigued, especially since Wall Street was a popular movie and I had a strange fascination with suspenders. Mike became my mentor.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to meet someone that’s been such a difference maker in my life, cue the sappy music. To be honest it’s large part why I want to make Dundee Venture Capital a reality. I want to play the roll of mentor to a few folks the way Mike mentored me.

I also have been a co-founder of two dynamic startups: giftcertificates.com and HayNeedle.com. Each time we recognized an untapped niche, acting upon the void and developed a scalable business. I was very lucky to have two amazing co-founders in Doug Nielsen and Julie Mahloch.

If I get the chance to meet anyone as energetic, focused and knowledgeable as them, I will bet it all again.

In my life I have been an investment banker and commercial banker. I’ve been a small business owner and have co-founder of two ecommerce businesses. I’ve stubbed my toe on lots of rocks, fallen and then got back up. The mistakes were building blocks for me. I’ve raised money and know the steps, the time and the effort it takes. I bring experience needed to take a start up to the next phase.

I don’t publish any news that often. For one, there is just not enough time; and two, even though I realize the huge value in being able to document important moments and relive memories–sometimes, it’s just good to keep grinding the stone.

But not today! Today we can gloat because our friend Nate Nordstrum, UNO, DailyMav and CEO alumni was proudly featured as Omaha’s newest startup employee in this article here:

30 days after launch, Deal Garden sees profit, opportunity

on SiliconPrairieNews.com. Pretty cool! While Nate may not be starting his own company, and DailyMav may have lost one of its best employees, the real feature here is that CEO and DailyMav are doing what it was designed to do: Create opportunity for success no matter what that success means. I would just like to take this time to narrate Nate’s story and say “Congrats, Nate” and good luck!

It all started when Nate attended a CEO session with speaker Vann Deeb. I can’t really remember what inspired Nate to attend one of our meetings, and even though he was a fresh graduate of UNO, Nate showed up on Thursday to hear a great salesman speak. And, rightly so, since after all, Nate was working for Mutual of Omaha in a sales type position. Without going into too much detail, Nate was unhappy with his job and his compensation, however, it wasn’t until later that I learned just how unhappy he was. After our meeting with Mr Deeb, Nate, Keith and I stayed and talked for a while about DailyMav. We had given an update to the club before Van spoke and Nate was interested in opportunities. Thus far, DailyMav was struggling. With a two man team, both of whom were non-traditional students, it was difficult to find time to talk to business owners and support the site that had virtually no testing. Within two weeks, DailyMav’s prospect pipeline was starting to fill up, along with new additional tools and smoother business processes. After a holiday meeting, Keith, Nate and myself met up with Pat Lazure and Mark Ludwin after receiving an email about DailyMav and their plans for DealGarden. It was a friendly meeting at Jason’s Deli, and turned out to be the spark for Nate’s new career. After the meeting, and exchanging contact, I received a conference call from Nate and Keith. Nate informed us that he would be technically leaving DailyMav and that he would help as much as possible, and that Pat and Mark had offered him a job for more than DailyMav could ever hope to offer.

This is what networking and talking with people can do for anyone and this is why CEO and DailyMav will continue to be around for years to come.

I had a great time at the EO discussion panel last night with Katie and Xin, and met up with a CEO alumni Nate Nordstrum.

Thanks to Katie for finding this amazing opportunity.

The night was devoted to a few topics discussed by Daryl Hamann, founder of Great Western Bank; Mike Simmonds, most successful Burger King chain owner in the country; and Bruce Hoberman, founder of Homers and Proxybid. Topics covered balance, of work and school life, to management philosophy and all other sorts of great advice. Not only was this great coverage for DailyMav, but I had ancients to talk to Omaha’s primer group of entrepreneurs!

Thanks again to all who attended and we hope to work more closely with EO in the future!
